The Power of Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy, normally from the sun, into chemical energy that can be used to fuel the organisms' activities. Carbohydrates, such as sugars, are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water hence the name photosynthesis, from the Greek phōs, "light", and synthesis, "putting together. Oxygen is also released, mostly as a waste product. Most plants, most algae, and cyanobacteria perform the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis maintains atmospheric oxygen levels and supplies all of the organic compounds and most of the energy necessary for all life on Earth.
Level 3 - The Guiding Question: How is the process of photosynthesis central to sustaining life on earth?
Read the online textbook chapter on "Photosynthesis".
If you are unable to view the above page please click on the button below.
Audio Alert- After reading the chapter above make a audio recording using "Vocaroo.com" or quicknote answer the following question, "Where does the energy for photosynthesis come from and do all organisms which carry out photosynthesis have chloroplasts? Explain your answer as fully as you can." It you do not how to make an audio recording please what the "how to" make an audio file in the technology menu on our website.
Level 3 - Investigation: An introductory Lab: What is the basic equation?
Watch this VDO to help you set up your lab. It can be done on your iPad, computer or the hand help data logger.
