Introductory Lab: How to use data loggers
Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions
Background Information
Exothermic and Endothermic Processes. When physical or chemical changes occur, they are generally accompanied by a transfer of energy. The law of conservation of energy states that in any physical or chemical process, energy is neither created nor destroyed. In other words, the entire energy in the universe is conserved. In order to better understand the energy changes taking place during a reaction, we need to define two parts of the universe, called the system and the surroundings. The system is the specific portion of matter in a given space that is being studied during an experiment or an observation. The surroundings is everything in the universe that is not part of the system. In practical terms for a laboratory chemist, the system is the particular chemicals being reacted, while the surroundings is the immediate vicinity within the room. During most processes, energy is exchanged between the system and the surroundings. If the system loses a certain amount of energy, that same amount of energy is gained by the surroundings. If the system gains a certain amount of energy, that energy is supplied by the surroundings.
In the study of thermochemical processes, things are viewed from the point of view of the system. A chemical reaction or physical change is endothermic if heat is absorbed by the system from the surroundings. In the course of an endothermic process, the system gains heat from the surroundings and so the temperature of the surroundings decreases. The quantity of heat for a process is represented by the letter . The sign of for an endothermic process is positive because the system is gaining heat. A chemical reaction or physical change is exothermic if heat is released by the system into the surroundings. Because the surroundings is gaining heat from the system, the temperature of the surroundings increases. The sign of for an exothermic process is negative because the system is losing heat.

Hypothesis
Put your Hypothesis in the form of an if ................then statement. For instance, if you place an alka-seltzer tablet in fruit juice then (predict what you believe the temperature or pH will do).

How to Screen Cast?
What is screen casting?Simply put, screen-casting is the act of recording the activity on a computer screen. Any action a user makes on their screen can be recorded as a video. These recordings, called screen-casts, can be seen all over the Web as parts of tutorials, advertisements, movies, training videos, and the like.
There are many uses for screen-casting, and this series of articles focuses on educational applications. In this area, recording a screen-cast is easy -- it's the technique that must be developed. But before jumping into the details, following is a video of different screen-cast applications and equipment. |

Educreation An iPad App:
A student and teacher tool for creating tutorials
Educreations is a screencasting app for the iPad that allows you to create tutorials for your students. It's easy to use and can have a profound impact on student achievement. Use this app to create tutorials for students who need extra review or for students who are ready to move on to a new concept. The following is a video that will introduce to you how to make simple content. I use it primarily as a tool students use to make digital projects for review or for explaining concepts to others. I find it relatively easy to use and most students pick it up quickly.
