In 1997 Lake Davis was poisoned rot to eradicate Northern Pike an invasive species that was thought to be introduced in the 50's. Pike have a voracious appetite and are apex predators they feed on all type of fish and small mammals. Department of Fish and Game wanted to stop the Pike before they established themselves down stream in salmon and steelhead runs. Now almost 20 years later what is the outcome of the DFG actions?

Lake Davis is now known for one of the best trophy trout lakes in the western United States. The fish are not being poisoned anymore . The population is actually been growing since everything that has been going on. There has been bigger fish than there was before . The people that visit the lake are very shocked and surprised on how the lake has improved

Just before the turn of the century, California’s Fish & Game exposed Lake Davis in Portola, California to a chemical called Rotenone to exterminate the invasive Pike species to prevent them from accessing the Sacramento Water Channel. Around 20 years later, native species, such as salmon, trout, and steelhead, are found in the lakes waters. Due to the poisoning of the lake, many tourists avoided the area, but after so many years they began to come back to fish and do various types of outdoor activities, which then allowed the economy of Portola to climb. The habitat may be disrupted from the chemicals, but long term, this really saved the native fish population, and that should be worth just a few conditions.

In 1997 the department of fish and game began to poison Lake Davis because there was an over population of northern pike and invasive species. In 2007 DFG stop poisoning because all the pike were gone but there are now problem with the drinking water and there have been medical cases of different types of cancer because of the water.
